Publishing, to share or not to share?
Updated: Apr 3
First of, thanks for reading this post, I know that there are a million bloggers & vloggers around the world, I can't speak for all of us but I can say that I very much appreciate every reader, viewer & listener of my content. So publishing, in 2020 this is an area of music that a lot of artist and musicians still aren't familiar with, somewhere between record labels and distribution, music publishing sits as the thing you need but don't need. Which way do you see it?The truth of the matter is that publishing is an essential part of music and media sharing, we all use publishing whenever we create or share our content with others, for creative, commercial or financial purposes. From collaborations to remixes, song writing to session music, we are exercising our right to publish our creative content. So, there you have it, we are all SELF PUBLISHERS.Wait, hold your applause, we haven't spoken about the important bit yet!!Ah ha, now I have your attention. Without exception, money is the only reason major publishing companies even exist. It's all about REVENUE COLLECTION, kinda like bailiffs, with a warrant to collect any money owed to the RIGHTS OWNER, by any user of any body of work in their archive. RIGHTS OWNER, because believe it or not creators don't always keep 100% or sometimes ANY, of their ownership rights - sad but very true.So what does it mean for you or me or anyone who wants to release music and be PAID for it?Publishing companies usually have a large collection of music and a large collection of contacts who need music, that are willing to pay for it upfront or share royalties with creators. Their job is to sell and licence the rights to use your music to other companies, agencies and creators. They should also register your music with other collection agencies like PRS for example, who collect money for radio plays and other public performances of your music in the UK.
Currently the state of royalty collection for artists looks similar to the global income generation gap, where the top 10% generate more royalties than the combined remaining 90%.
With the music and media industries getting ever more complex, - as if it wasn’t complex enough before - what you find is, on one hand it’s become easier for musicians to generate an income from their music, you could build your own website or use platforms that allow you to set your tracks as a paid download or use a digital aggregator to get your music into already established streaming sites. On the other hand, we find independent musicians being further removed from the royalty side of things, as radio become more ”controlled” and independent publishing companies go bust or get bought up by the majors. Currently the state of royalty collection for artists looks similar to the global income generation gap, where the top 10% generate more royalties than the combined remaining 90%.' Rap 'your head around that one...Having a publisher whether big or small, is about expanding your reach, getting into the markets or areas that would turn your music career into an office admin job. A publisher should actively find ways to generate money for your music, then once its been used, they go collecting and bring all that money to you! - minus their percentage of course.Once Upon a time publishing was the way to get rich without needing a label, nowadays, it’s difficult to tell if music publishing still has an independent future or whether the major publishers will end up being the only bridge, (or filter depending on which way you look at things) between making money short term and making money for the rest of your life.
